How to tell if your Dell laptop CPU is bad and how to choose the correct one.

Dell laptops are equipped with diagnostic beep codes that can help you determine which component is defective or incorrectly installed.  When you turn on your laptop you will notice the caps lock, num lock, wifi and other lights blink simultaneously.   Depending on the nature of the problem, these lights will blink several times, usually in sequence.  For example the num lock and caps lock may blink 5 times in sequence, stop and blink again five more times.  This is your error code and with it you can find out what could be the problem with your notebook.  You will need to consult your owner’s manual or with Dell to determine what the beep codes mean as they vary from model to model.  This feature is very helpful and if used properly it can save you money and time in the long run.  If you determine your Dell laptop CPU is bad based on these beep codes you will surely need to replace it.  In order for you to purchase the correct processor, remove your Intel or AMD chip and locate the part number.  With Intel the part number begins with the letter “S” and with AMD it begins with the letter “T”, “L” or “S”.

There are some Dell processors that have a Dell part number on them, usually with a sticker or label.  You can also use the Dell part number to locate the exact processor your notebook requires.  Replacing a faulty Dell laptop CPU is easily done.  There are no drivers or any software you need to install.  You need to simply locate the processor, remove the heatsink and set the clip to the “unlock” position.  Do not try to force removal as the pins are fragile and could break very easily.  When you are ready to install the new CPU there is a triangle marking on both the chip and the slot located on one of the four corners.  Match these two triangles with the slot and install.  Be sure to set the CPU slot back into the “lock” position or else your notebook will not turn on and you will continue seeing error codes.  It is also a good idea to use thermal paste and make sure your heatsink is properly installed.  A loose heatsink or an incorrectly installed one can cause your CPU to overheat and cause damage to the processor.  Keeping your cooling fans clean and running smoothly is also just as important.  Your notebook needs to continually remove heat from the components effectively in order for it to run smoothly and to avoid problems in the long run.  If you need assistance in locating the correct Dell laptop CPU for your notebook repair, please contact us and we will gladly assist you.
