History: In the Heian era, members of the nobility rode in oxen drawn carts or wagons called "gosho guruma" or court carriage. After the Kamakura era this mode of transportation was replaced by the litter or palanquin, but because of its elegant and classic shape it remained a motif in art. Later, with the rise of the popularity of Kadou, or flower arrangement, among both the nobility and warrior (Samurai) classes, ever more elaborate designs were created using flowers and grasses of the four seasons. At the height of the craze intricatedesigns including baskets and even gosho guruma appeared in these arrangements, thus the name "hana guruma" or flower carriage. Designs of hana guruma often appear on wedding kimono.
Our small size wall hangings are made from handkerchiefs, scarves and small furoshiki. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side))--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
