Title: Lucky Goldfish (kingyo) Signs of Summer Kingyo
Size: 17 inches wide by 49 inches long including tabs. Ready to hang--natural bamboo rod included.
Description: Orange and black goldfish swim on a pale aqua background with golden brown accents. Deep aqua on paler aqua abstract design border.
History: Long ago in China, goldfish were considered lucky symbols as the word for "fish" and "plenty" were pronounced the same in Chinese. Fish often appeared on wedding goods as a symbol that means "lots of time" for the newly weds. In Japan, with some exceptions, this custom is no longer practiced. Instead, goldfish seem to have become a symbol of summer. In this charming scene, with traditional blown glass wind chimes that create a cool tinkling sound at the slightest breeze, and a sudare or woven bamboo screen for shade, the goldfish swimming lazily in their bowl seem to bring a welcome respite from the summer heat.
For followers of feng shui—goldfish are 'baby dragons' and considered very lucky. The Chinese word for fish 'yu', is the same as the word for success. If you are unable to have a small bowl of goldfish, hanging this near the entrance of a business establishment would help to attract prosperity to you.
Our scroll size wall Hangings (long and narrow) are made from printed 100% cotton fabric panels, tenugui (printed cotton 'towels') or a noren (doorway curtain). They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the panel size itself is measured not the rod (which extends an inch or so past the panel on each side)--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
