History: "Ten" is the kanji for the sky or the heavens. It is written here in a very stylized form called "shodo" or Japanese calligraphy. Unlike western calligraphy which only has 26 characters, in Japan there are approximately 48,000 characters to choose from, and each is a pictograph, a picture that expresses an idea rather than just a sound. For that reason, more than good handwriting, shodo is a highly specialized art form in which the skill and imagination of the artist are expressed in a matter of seconds with a brush and black ink (sumi) on rice paper, there is no chance to go back and correct mistakes. It is the artist's job to bring the kanji to life and give it character.
This piece was made from an original design by Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984), designer, painter, and illustrator, who was designated a Japanese Living National Treasure in 1956. He was honored for being the pioneer of katazome, or hand-stencil dyeing, using cut out paper patterns and applying color to the stencils in a process that combined traditional Japanese dying techniques with Okinawan bingata. He was also a leader of the Japanese folk art movement or "mingei," and though many of his themes are not considered traditional there is still an element in them that is essentially Japanese. His works appear in many forms, kimono, decorative screens, wall hangings, fans, paintings, book covers, calendars and original prints, and have been exhibited worldwide.
Our large size quilted wall hangings are made from 100% cotton or cotton/rayon blend furoshiki (a traditional Japanese decorative wrapping cloth) or can be made from other textile panels. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension and a cotton backing. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the finished panel size itself is measured--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
