Title: Autumn Moon and Hares
Size: 50 inches wide by 54 1/2 inches long including tabs--largest size made by Japanesque Accents. Rod not included.
Description: Autumn grasses in rich reddish brown and tan on deep blue background. White rabbits and mustard yellow moon. Cross hatched brown on blue border.
History: There is an old Chinese tale of a hare that resides in the moon who pounds the magic herbs to make the elixir of eternal life. This belief was assimilated by the Japanese who instead see the hare in the moon pounding mochi or rice cakes, a play on the words, "mochitsuki" which means "pounding mochi," and "mochizuki" which is the name of the moon on the 15th night of the lunar calendar, in other words the full moon. Here, a white hare cavorts in front of a full autumn moon while several more frolic among three of the "aki no nana kusa" or seven grasses of autumn, "kikyo," purple Chinese bell flowers, "hagi," Japanese bush clover, and "susuki," Japanese pampas grass. Autumn grasses appear during what is considered to be the most beautiful season of the year while the harvest moon is deemed the brightest. Together they have provided a motif for Japanese art since the Nara Era (710-794).
Our large size quilted wall hangings are made from 100% cotton or cotton/rayon blend furoshiki (a traditional Japanese decorative wrapping cloth) or can be made from other textile panels. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension and a cotton backing. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the finished panel size itself is measured--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
