Title: Iris Wreath
Size: Approx. 42 inches wide by 45 inches long. Rod not included.
Description: Hand screened iris panel in purples, gray-blues and dusty maroon on dark indigo background. Deep indigo woven look border.
History: Irises have captivated the hearts of the Japanese people since ancient times. The irises seen today are usually hana-shobu, which was first cultivated in Edo about 500 years ago. It was once believed that iris gave protection from the evil spirits that were abroad on the fifth day of the fifth month, and traditionally boys would bathe with the sword-like leaves on this day as the iris also symbolizes the warrior spirit. The iris is still displayed on May 5th as part of what was once Tango no Sekku but has now become known as Children's Day. This design appears on cloth that has been hand dyed with the distinctive aizome or indigo dye.
Our large size quilted wall hangings are made from 100% cotton or cotton/rayon blend furoshiki (a traditional Japanese decorative wrapping cloth) or can be made from other textile panels. They are machine quilted, hand-guided, using two layers of low loft polyester batting to provide added depth and dimension and a cotton backing. Sizes listed under each item are approximate. For the width, the finished panel size itself is measured--and the length is measured from the top of the tabs to the bottom of the panel.
