Technology in the 00′s has changed the way we shop, specifically on the internet. It used to be that you can only browse through the internet through your laptop or PC, that all changed when mobile came to the scene with real browser and then it happened…the newest gadget that is changing it all again, the tablet.
As internet retailers, this new gadget is just another tool that is a dream come true for us. Why? Because it makes the public shop online more as they sit anywhere in the world, start browsing and can make a decision within a split second to buy from our website rather than go to the local mall, etc.
Let’s look at an illustratinon with Tablets and ONLINE SHIPPING:

Some things to note:
1. Age demographics between 18-34 is the group that most shops through tablets. Granted, most of this age demographic works or goes to school during the day-time so most likely, purchases may be done during afternoon-night time.
2. The growth of tablet users from 2012 to 2014 is over 30+ million which will continue to benefit e-commerce.
3. The habits of the tablet user are the following:
-58% of tablet users occur at home
-52% of tablet users prefer to shop online using their tablets.
-40% prefer using a desktop/latpop.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
-Conversion rates between mobile users and tablet users for ecommerce is 2.3% (tablet users) vs. 0.6% mobile users. Tablets have higher conversion rates.
-The average order value between smart phones, tablets and desktops all differ with Tablets having the higher average order value at $123.

As internet retailers we strive to really figure out what the best way to turn visitors into customers is. This is a daily and never ending job that we try to figure out.
I came across a great post today from the KissMetrics blog titled, “What The Highest Converting Websites Do Differently.” I think as internet retailers we constantly ask ourselves that question and as much as we ask it, we actually analyze it by looking at competitor’s websites, etc. BUT, my question to you, the reader is this, do you ask yourself, “ what can we be doing differently?”
Let’s look at the key highlights from the post that may inspire you to really get active on the conversion optimization front:
-Companies that take on a structured approach towards conversion optimization are twice as likely to see a large increase in sales?
-61% of companies do less than 5 tests a month.
-You have about 0-8 seconds to make a compelling selling headline or landing page.
-After 8 seconds, majority of visitors will leave your website.
-Approximately 96% of visitors that come to your website are not ready to buy.
-Product videos can increase conversions by 144%!

Day in and day out you always hear a friend or family member say, “I’m going to start an ecommerce website.” That’s great. Really, it is. The problem with most people who make that remark is that when you ask them what they are going to sell…they simply aren’t too sure.
How we all wish ecommerce was that simple, right? In order to have a successful ecommerce business, it’s important, I would say IMPERATIVE you do your research on what it is you will sell.
So, how do you decide what to sell online? What will you sell on your new ecommerce website?
PASSION IS ALWAYS THE BEST FIRST CHOICE
People will always tell you or you will always hear the famous line, “do what you love,” or “do what makes you happy.” I will tell you this…”SELL WHAT YOU LOVE…SELL WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.”
Think about products or something that you really love and really try to get into that niche. If you sell what you love, you’re more likely to be a lot more engaged in the business and really enthused about it which will create a good positive energy to start building your business.
WHAT IF I CAN’T SELL WHAT I LOVE OR WANT?
As cliche as this may sound, if you want to do it, you probably can’t. But let’s say you can’t start an online business selling your first option…what to sell now you ask? Go to websites like Amazon, Zappos and other big players and look for best sellers. Browse through their gigantic website and see what is popular, what is trending, etc.

It’s not easy to build a successful eCommerce business. In fact, it’s very hard. It takes a lot of work and persistence to build a successful ecommerce business. Some people will build a website and be off to the races in no time, others will have to work a few months, maybe years to really build an ecommerce business.
On a personal note, there is nothing more gratifying than building a successful business. It takes hard work and dedication…and the secret ingredient may be passion. Passion for what you do. It’s very important to work in a smart, efficient way. Sometimes, or I should say MANY TIMES, most of us that start a business tend to over complicate it or over-plan our strategy and what we need to make money from an ecommerce website.
