More and more focus and emphasis is being put in to the social space, and rightly so. The buzz for online marketers these days is all about how to leverage our Twitter accounts and Facebook Fan pages to keep users engaged, drive more traffic to our websites and put our eCommerce websites on the social map. For your website, now is the time to really push your Twitter eCommerce marketing.

For those looking for tools to market on Twitter, see our post and resource on Twitter marketing tools. The question many internet retailers still have about Twitter is two-fold.

1. Why should we use Twitter for marketing?

2.  How do people actually use Twitter?

1A:  Twitter is one of the biggest social hubs in the world. You can even say it is the new medium of communication besides Facebook on the web between people (exclude email from this statement.) Twitter can really help the word out and to throw a nice little tip in there, Twitter may even have some impact on your search engine rankings. Twitter can help drive traffic to your website and can be very targeted traffic as well.

2A:  People use Twitter to communicate with their friends but if you look at Twitter closely, many use Twitter for the purpose of sharing content. Go on Twitter right now and do a search for a specific keyword. You’ll find many tweets will have links on them…the sharing of content on the web is at a tremendous level which really helps us in terms of building traffic…more than ever.

Ways to use Twitter for drive traffic and engage users to your eCommerce website:

1. Add Tweet Buttons on Every Page of Your Website: There are many websites on the web that offer Tweet/Re-Tweet buttons for your website. These buttons can facilitate the sharing process for users and help spread your content. Use this Twitter button (which ever you choose) on EVERY page of your website. Please see social media sharing buttons.

2. Use Twitter Search Box: Use the Twitter search box and type in your main keywords for your online business. You should see a few tweets which means there are people talking about that specific topic. Reply to their tweet with something informative to say and get the conversation started. You can always tweet something of real value with a backlink to your website which can drive that user back to your website.

3.  Check Your Competitors Twitter Account: Look at your competitors Twitter account and see who is following them. Do not spam but those people may be interested in following you as well. Send a friend request to those followers.

4. Use Hashtags for your Tweets: Hashtags are a signal on Twitter about what the tweet is about and a good way for users interested in specific topics to find your Tweets. It’s as simple as A,B,C. See Marketing on Twitter with Hashtags.

Thanks for sharing. Confused about one of the points though. The one labelled 3 towards the end of the post. You mention it’s good to add people as friends on Twitter, I’d never noticed a function like that. Are you perhaps meaning, follow that person?

  2. Pablo Says:

Yes Nick, I do apologize for that….I meant follow. I write so much about Facebook and Twitter use similar terminology.
